Thoughts on Ego

One of the most common concepts in esoteric circles is that ego is evil. To the point that your ego is used as an insult, and to make one feel lesser. I have been pondering on the entire concept of ego lately and come to realise it certainly isn’t as evil as we make it out to be.
Ego itself stems from self pride which, if in excess, can certainly make for a narcissistic and arrogant human. But what of more humble beings? Those who are guided by good and wish to do well? Is ego then not of benefit as a boost to self pride and pride in their work? Taking pride in one’s work and oneself leads to self worth and a more positive mindset, which is hardly a negative situation.
Ego can also drive one to better oneself, to do things worthy of that pride and a need to be recognised. While this is not entirely altruistic, there is certainly little wrong with the drive to perfect yourself, especially if it is part of the journey to help others.
